I like this car. It is a rather unknown prototype that had several different powertrains and noses. This is the best looking body and has a carbureted V8. It makes a good model that you won't see everywhere. The interior is quite accurate. No fit problems. Very little flash.
I have few complaints. No radiator hoses attached to engine. The inside lower door pulls are missing. I had trouble with the decals not laying flat, even after using Solvaset. The nose decal is incorrect. I am told the tires are wrong, but work fine.I am told this is a tricky model to put together. The biggest problem is the order of assembly. I suggest you follow my order of assembly. I suggest building the interior first. Since I modified the interior and opened the bi-fold gull wing door, I did a lot of trial fitting. This can not be done if you glue the nose and tail sections to the main body. Then assemble the engine and rear suspension to the floor pan (not the muffler, slip the muffler into place to help line up exhaust pipes while manifold glue is still soft...do not glue muffler in place). Also, sand the raised emblem off the air cleaner...so that the decal will lay flat. Continued below...
DO NOT assemble the front suspension yet. If you want to eliminate body panel seams and get a good paint job, I suggest that you glue the nose and tail panels on and fill the seams before painting...not after painting as the instructions suggest (and after you are satisfied with the interior). After painting the body, install the rear hatch glass and rear side windows from inside. Then slide the rear floor pan (with the interior, engine, and radiator attached) into rear section. Once the rear locating pins are engaged they can not be disassembled. Next flex the front floor pan into nose. It will flex more more than you think. Now you can install the front suspension and muffler. Finally install the windshield form outside.
This car is certainly a rare subject - rare to the fact that I believe that there is only one Aerovette in existence! This was a good car to build and was easy to detail. The decals that came with the model were strong, and fitted well. The paint process was straightforward, and with a good spraypaint, a good result was easily achievable. While a 'curbside', there is full engine detail - A clear panel shows a good view of the enginebay.
There are a few. The most obvious one was that ONE TYRE was MISSING! Luckily after building many rival AMT models with extra parts (e.g. spare tyres) I could use alternative tyres instead. For some reason, Revell do not bag their parts. Lets just say I had to polish out a lot of scratches from the clear glass panels! AMT by contrast tend to bag everything! The window fitting was a chore - it took quite a while to get right, and there always was a massive risk of ruining the glass with glue! Luckily I believe Revell offer a parts backup service.I do not like Revell's practice of sealing up the body by fitting the bumpers in post production after the chassis is fitted!
Due to being a one-off, I built this car box stock. I do recommend this kit throughly, but only if you have patience first!
This kit is nicely molded, with minimal, pretty much non-existant flash. Chrome parts are well done. Details are crisp and sharp. Separate interior door panels make detailing easy. Assembly, for the most part, is easy and straight-forward.
Clear parts were not bagged and required some clean-up to remove scuffs. The muffler/tailpipes which are called out to be painted flat black, are chromed, requiring stripping. Front and side windows are a little tricky to get installed correctly. My example had substantial mold separation lines on the rear shocks/springs and some mismatching of thickness on the transaxle halves. Stock paint scheme is a little boring.
All in all I found this to be a very enjoyable build. Parts fit was good, except for those noted above. I found that with a little judicious filing, the nose and tail caps can be made to fit quite well with no fillier required. This kit will make a nice addition to any collection. Recommended for anyone.
