Making A Carbon Fiber Hood

CF Hoods are very common on Tuners (modified imports) and I first tried creating one on my RX8. The following tutorial describes the method I used to replicate a CF Hood in scale for kits that have the hood moulded shut.

The following tools are required:

Tutorial Photograph (1.jpg)

1 x Sheet of CF Decal,

1 x Artist Marker,

1 x Exacto Knife with #11 Blade,

1 x Roll of 40mm Tamiya Masking Tape.

Begin by laying the tape over the hood of the car as illustrated below.

Using the artist marker, trace around the panel lines and the outer edges of the hood.

Gently peel off the tape and lay it over the CF Decal sheet.

Using the Exacto knife, carefully cut around the outer edges of the markings. This will allow a little room for error.

You should be left with something that looks like the following.

At this stage gently peel off the tape and apply the decal as per normal.

Have fun trying out this simple technique that will help turn your kits into head turners just like the real tuners. Try this technique on seats and other interior trimmings. (Note the water marks, these can be removed with gentle buffing)
