Materials you will need:

  • Gold Leaf
  • Gold Leaf Size
  • Flat Paint Brush
  • Masking Tape (I recommend Tamiya because it's thin.)
  • Soft Rag (Old T-Shirt)

Prep and paint your body as you normally would just before clear coating. Then tape off the design that you want to leaf, just as you would if painting it.

Now apply a thin but even coat of the gold leaf size, making sure you completely fill in the area that you taped off. Then let it dry as per the instructions on the bottle, usually a few minutes until just tacky.

Gently remove the gold leaf from the package and carefully lay it on the sized area, being careful not to get any wrinkles in it.

Taking your soft cloth, gently burnish the leaf into the size. Make sure you burnish the edges rather well.

Continue laying the gold leaf until the entire area is covered. You can over lap the leaf for good coverage; the leaf will not stick to anything but the size.

Again using your cloth, burnish down the leaf while rubbing off the excess. The loose leaf will just fall off in little pieces.

Now gently remove the masking tape by pulling it back over itself to cut a clean edge. Again, gently burnish the entire area and now your ready for your clear coat.

And the finished product.

Gold leaf comes in many different colors. Straight gold and silver along with variegated colors. I used red variegated for this project. You can use this technique to do flames, scallops, pin stripes, lettering etc. Give it a try; it's an easy way to get some dramatic results.
